As 2024 comes to a close, CEO Kimberly Driggins is humbled to reflect on five incredible years with the Washington Housing Conservancy (WHC). It has been an honor for her to lead this organization working to make the housing system work for everyone, not just the privileged few.
Our mission—to preserve affordable housing, stabilize rents, and create opportunities for wealth-building and community connection—has never been more urgent. The lack of affordable housing in the DMV continues to strain moderate to low-income families and individuals, burdened by high rents that threaten stability and dim their future.

This year, WHC has strengthened our efforts around social impact to build thriving, inclusive, connected communities. We are proud of what we have accomplished, especially the partnerships we’ve forged to advance our mission and amplify our impact. Here are a few highlights from the year.
- A New Playground at Huntwood Courts: Through our partnership with KABOOM!, we built a vibrant, safe space where children can play and neighbors can connect.
- Greener Communities with Casey Trees: This fall, we planted trees at Huntwood Courts, Hamilton Manor, and Earle Manor, beautifying our neighborhoods and creating healthier environments for our residents.
- Support from National Philanthopy: WHC was honored to be selected as a 2024 New Profit Build Investment, consisting of an unrestricted grant and strategic support, further validating our innovative approach to housing. WHC was also selected as one of 10 recipients of TD Ready Challenge from TD Bank Group to further advance our mission and provide a blueprint to address housing affordability challenges in other cities.
- Leading the Conversation on Social Infrastructure: This year, we’ve championed the importance of fostering social connections alongside physical infrastructure, shaping the dialogue on how we build equitable, inclusive communities. Kimberly Driggins co-authored with Reimagining the Civic Commons Director Bridget Marquis, “Can Strong Social Infrastructure Cure the Loneliness Epidemic?, featured in the American Planning Association Magazine and on Medium. Kimberly also spoke on a panel for RetroReport moderated by Soledad O’Brien on the same topic.
- New Board Members: WHC welcomed three new Board members, Trevor Brown of New Profit, Aakash Thakkar of EYA LLC and Mark Joseph of the National Initiative on Mixed-Income Communities.
- A Celebration of Five Remarkable Years: WHC issued its Five-Year Impact Report and capped this anniversary year with a reception celebrating Kimberly Driggins’ leadership and honoring the many partners, supporters, and visionaries who have brought WHC to life.
The Challenges Ahead
While we have made great progress, we also face strong headwinds. Rents continue to rise faster than incomes. In 2025, we will redouble our efforts to ensure that those working families and individuals who are part of “the missing middle,” those who don’t qualify for subsidies but can’t keep pace with escalating rents, can stay in the communities they love with access to transportation, high-performing schools, employment opportunities, and other amenities that promote economic, physical and mental wellbeing.
