Five years ago, when Kimberly Driggins joined WHC as its first executive director, the organization was nearly a year old and barely more than an innovative and powerful idea. What was particularly compelling was its vision for how to make the housing system become a more equitable pathway for opportunity and prosperity.
And now looking back at the short time WHC has been operating, we are proud of all that we have accomplished and deeply grateful for the people and institutions who have joined with us to bring our vital vision to life, to make a profound impact on our residents, and to offer new approaches to tackling our housing challenges in the DMV.
Our success and impact would not have been possible without the support, sweat equity, and belief in our work from so many.
WHC took the bold step to focus on the forgotten “missing middle,” working families and individuals who don’t qualify for subsidies, and whose wages haven’t kept pace with housing prices. These are our teachers, social workers, first responders, hospitality workers who have become rental nomads, often having to leave communities their families have lived in for years because they can no longer afford housing costs. This displacement has hit communities of color disproportionately.
In this season of Thanksgiving, we want to express gratitude to:
- Federal City Council and our founding Board of Directors and Day One supporters who include local leaders in real estate, philanthropy, and community development.
- Our current Board, who provides their wisdom, guidance, and support at every turn.
- JBG SMITH, LEO Impact Capital and the investors in the Impact Pool which has helped us source and finance our apartment acquisitions.
- The National Initiative on Mixed-Income Communities (NIMC) has helped us shape our social impact strategy.
- The Amazon Housing Equity Fund, which was instrumental in several of our property acquisitions, including our first at Crystal House.
- Our corporate, foundation, and individual funders whose generous support sustains us and enables us to grow our work.
- Kaboom! and Casey Trees have helped us create and enhance our communities with vibrant and beautiful outdoor spaces where residents can gather and connect.
- Our residents and property management staff who work with us to build community and create communities of opportunity.
Thank you all for your interest, support and partnership to create a future in which the housing system benefits all residents, not just the privileged few. In the coming month and as the year closes, we hope you’ll continue to engage and invest in WHC and our mission.
